How Positivity Has helped me by Sarah Maitland-Price
Do you tend to look on the bright side, or do you see things filled with stormy skies?
Research has found a link between an upbeat mental state and improved health, including lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart disease.
In the past, I was one of these thinkers that would always start off thinking the worst, and if it turned out to be better than I thought then that was a bonus, this went on for me for years and I am not sure where I had even picked this trait up from.
Working as a Holistic Therapist and Life Coach I discovered that every thought we have releases some type of chemical. When positive thoughts are generated, for example when you are happy cortisol decreases and the brain produces serotonin, creating a feeling of well-being.
Another example is when a person practises gratitude, they get a surge of the rewarding neurotransmitters and experience a general alerting and brightening of the mind.
So I asked myself the question – “What was I doing constantly thinking the worst about everything and what was it doing to my body and mind?
So how do you keep a positive mindset?
These are some of the things that I use in my everyday life.
1/ Positive Affirmations
Making a positive affirmation every morning can start to reset your mind. My favourite affirmation waking up each morning is “Today is going to be a great day.” Try this and you will see a difference.
Positive affirmations are simple statements that you come up with based on your needs and emotions and I know from personal experience if you say “It is not going to be a good day today” it usually is not.
2/ Practice Gratitude
How often do we concentrate on the negatives that happen in our lives, and how often do we keep looking at what went wrong? How about what went right today, yesterday, or last year it does not have to be a big win, pay attention to all the small great things that have happened and be thankful for those experiences, this helps you to appreciate life and you will realise that the world has so much to offer
3/ Surround Yourself With Positive People
How can you live your life with the most positive mindset possible if you spend a lot of time with people who drag you down?
I am very lucky to have a lot of people in my life that constantly lift me and whom I learn from every day, that also bring joy into my world and bring bags of positivity into my life.
Time with positive people will allow you to move through life with a smile on your face.
4/ Practice Self-Care
Practising self-care is a big part of my life and I am always saying to clients “Make sure you are practising self-care”. Practising what I preach is what I am aware of and I know that self-care is a crucial part of looking after yourself, as well as others.
When you practise self-care you are producing positive feelings, which helps boost motivation and self-esteem, so book that yoga class or spa day, join that walking group you keep saying you are going to join, and even start ice dipping every morning, although this is not for everyone.
I have seen a difference in including all of these in my life.
Our bodies respond to the way we think, feel and act, which is the mind/body connection. Understanding how these things impact our health is key to being able to lead a positive life.
