How to stop being a yes woman with toni daly

When it comes to being in the workplace things can change constantly. It can be quite frustrating working to someone else’s hymn sheet. There can be a high turnover of staff and there are always new people coming in and out.

It can make it so difficult to keep going with your job and your responsibilities and yet then you also have to add on extra responsibilities to get everything completed in the right time frame.

When you’ve been doing a job to a high standard for so long, things can still change overnight without any notice. So what do you do when the unexpected happens?

Here are the best ways to set boundaries and stop yourself being overwhelmed when the unexpected happens:

Understand what you can control.

When you understand what you can control it makes you think about going back to basics. Focussing on the day to day things can help you to understand where your attention needs to be first and foremost.

Make a list of priorities.

Based on the Ivy Lee method you can make a list of what is a priority for you. You make a list of six items a day and you must complete the first item before you go on to the next one. The idea of this is that you can save time and prioritise in a way that sets boundaries for you. This ensures that you accomplish the task, making sure you’ll complete it. You’ll have satisfaction from the completion and you are stacking success.

If the tasks are complex and you cannot complete them all in one day, then you make them the first priority in your new list for the next day. Each day your list can carry over to a new day.

Do not be the yes woman.

Rather than becoming the ‘yes person’ where you overpromise and underdeliver you can start to set real boundaries with others. Use the list you’ve written from the Ivy Lee method. Utilise your list and this will make it easier for you to stop saying yes.

You understand what you can control, you have a list therefore you can enforce your boundaries. Let this empower you.

Sometimes you just need a day. It doesn’t always have to be a good day, you need to wake up, make sure you are fed and watered and sort of parent yourself.

Sometimes getting through the day itself is underestimated, when actually you’ve looked after yourself and that’s important.
